The Nasarawa State branch of the Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Waste Management And Sanitation Authority recently launched a sensitisation campaign against cholera and other diseases. The programme was aimed at educating residents on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of diseases.

Speaking during the sensitisation campaign in Lafia, the State Branch Secretary of Red Cross, Jerry Kuje, emphasized the importance of personal and environmental hygiene in preventing the spread of diseases. He explained that the organization decided to sensitize the residents on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene to teach them how to prevent diseases to enable them to enjoy good health.

Kuje further stated, “We are aware that cholera, diarrhoea, malaria, and other diseases spread very fast in dirty environments. Many people have lost their lives to these diseases, and the only way we can completely eradicate them is by keeping ourselves and our environments clean at all times. The aim of personal and environmental hygiene is to prevent diseases. When the environment is polluted with toxic waste, it can make children and even adults fall sick, and that is what we are trying to prevent by embarking on this sensitisation campaign.”

On her part, the Head of Southern Senatorial Zone of the Nasarawa State Waste Management And Sanitation Authority, Zainab Ahmed, decried the nonchalant attitude of some residents of the state who deliberately dump refuse in restricted locations in the state, warning that such behaviors will no longer be condoned by the agency. She added, “The reason we are making efforts to talk to our people to practice personal and environmental hygiene is that we don’t want them to fall sick or die young from the numerous diseases that affect people, especially cholera. So, we don’t want to joke about it. We cannot afford to keep losing our children and other relatives to diseases that are preventable.”

The sensitization campaign was designed to teach residents of the state the importance of personal and environmental hygiene to prevent the spread of diseases. The campaign featured demonstrations on how to sweep the surroundings, evacuate refuse, washing of hands, among others. Residents were encouraged to embrace good hygiene practices, such as proper disposal of refuse, washing of hands, and maintaining clean environments to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease can cause severe dehydration and can be fatal if left untreated. The recent outbreak of cholera has affected several states, and health officials have been working to contain the disease.

The Nasarawa State Red Cross Society and Waste Management And Sanitation Authority have called on residents to embrace personal and environmental hygiene to stay healthy and prevent the spread of diseases. The sensitisation campaign is an important step towards reducing the spread of cholera and other diseases in the state.

The campaign aims to prevent diseases by emphasizing personal and environmental hygiene. By keeping the environment clean, toxic waste and pollutants that cause cholera and other diseases can be reduced. The sensitisation campaign is timely, as cases of cholera are currently on the rise in several states.

The campaign has received praise from residents, who have commended the efforts of the Red Cross Society and Waste Management And Sanitation Authority in sensitizing them on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene.
