Lagos, Nigeria, October 23, 2023 – In the bustling city of Lagos, where the daily work life can often consume workers’ time and energy, the importance of regular physical activity has taken center stage. The city’s fitness enthusiasts and experts are emphasizing the crucial role exercise plays in maintaining a healthy and motivated workforce, while also calling on employers to do more to support their employees’ well-being.

Fitness Enthusiasts Lead the Way

Lagos has seen a surge in fitness enthusiasm, with individuals from all walks of life recognizing the significance of incorporating exercise into their daily routines. Whether it’s a morning jog along the streets of Surulere or a group in a work out session around corners in Shitta, staff and students of UNILAG are not left behind as workout hall is mostly packed full every morning. Residents are embracing physical activity as a means of staying healthy, both physically and mentally.

Mr. Chidi Okafor, a local fitness trainer and founder of “LagosFitLife,” a fitness community in Shitta said, “People are realizing the power of exercise in transforming their lives. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about feeling better, having more energy, and being more productive. We’re witnessing a fitness revolution.” According to him more people are joining the community daily, and it’s a parked corner whenever they come out to workout every morning.

Empowering Employees for Well-being

While the city’s workers are taking the initiative to prioritize fitness, some Lagos-based companies are also recognizing the importance of employee well-being. These progressive companies are introducing a range of initiatives to support their employees’ health and fitness goals. Some companies have flexible work hours to accommodate workouts and rsst period, company workout session  and even financial incentives for achieving fitness milestones.

Ms. Osaro Ighodaro, a Human Resources Officer at an establishment, stated, ” employees are a company’s most valuable asset. I believe that a healthy workforce is a productive one. This is why companies invest in wellness programs, promote fitness, and encourage a work-life balance.”

Expert Perspective on Health Benefits

Dr. Ifeoma Nwachukwu, a Lagos-based physician with a specialization in sports medicine, stressed the profound benefits of regular exercise. “Exercise is a prescription for good health,” she said. “It helps in weight management, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves mental health, and enhances overall well-being. Employers should encourage their employees to engage in regular physical activity.” She emphasized that just as companies send heir staff on training to upgrade their skills, they must also allow them train physically to upgrade their health and mind. 

A Call for Greater Employer Responsibility

While the progress is commendable, the call for employers across Lagos to take even greater responsibility for the well-being of their employees continue to grow. Fitness enthusiasts and experts suggests  providing wellness programs, organizing group fitness activities, and addressing workplace stressors to create a more conducive environment for physical activity can help promote the health and well being of the Lagos work force.

Dr. Nwachukwu added, “Employers should see their employees’ health and fitness as a long-term investment. It not only reduces healthcare costs but also boosts morale and productivity.”

The push for fitness and exercise will eventually transforms Lagos workforce. With employees taking charge of their health and employers recognizing the connection between well-being and productivity, Lagos will be on its way to becoming a healthier and more vibrant city.
