The Edo State Government has issued a warning to residents of the state against the sale and usage of the Norvasc 5mg tablets produced by the United States-based drug developer, Viatris Inc. This follows the discovery of iron wires in samples taken from the shipment.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obehi Akoria, the warning comes after an alert by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. According to Prof. Akoria, “The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert and warning that the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration has ordered the recall of six million tablets from two batches of Norvasc 5mg tablets produced by U.S-based drug developer Viatris Inc, following the discovery of iron wires in samples taken from the shipment and claims from Taiwan Norvasc users that the tablets when cut into halves contain iron wire.”
He added, “The above information makes the two batches of Norvasc 5mg tablets substandard.”
Prof. Akoria advised all persons, pharmaceutical outlets and health facilities who may have any of these batches of Norvasc 5mg tablets in stock to immediately dispose of them using the appropriate channels. He also urged residents to be vigilant and not use the product. They are advised to contact their doctor to discuss suitable alternatives while the state Ministry of Health can be contacted for further information.
The Edo State Government has assured residents that it is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the people. According to Prof. Akoria, “Please be vigilant. Do not use this product and contact your doctor to discuss suitable alternatives while the state Ministry of Health can also be contacted.”
The Edo State Government warns that anyone found selling or using the substandard Norvasc 5mg tablets will face the full wrath of the law. Prof. Akoria emphasized that “all persons, pharmaceutical outlets and health facilities who may have any of these batches of Norvasc 5mg tablets in stock should immediately dispose of them using the appropriate channels.”
This development has caused concern among residents of Edo State, with many expressing shock at the discovery of iron wires in the medication. One resident, Mr. Osaro Omoregie, said, “I am shocked and saddened to hear about this. It is alarming to think that a medication that is supposed to help people can be contaminated in this way.”
Another resident, Mrs. Esther Osagie, said, “I am grateful to the Edo State Government for alerting us to this danger. It is important that we are informed about these things so that we can take steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones.”
