Anaemia is when the body’s cells lose their energy supply as a result of low red blood cells, which supply food and oxygen to the cells. The red blood cells contain haemoglobin, and haemoglobin is a protein that controls the movement of oxygen in the body. There are some Nigerian food that gives blood, which we will talk about. The best way to build blood is to add into your diet things with vitamin B 12, iron and folic acid. Another name to call anaemia is loss of blood. Low blood cells are caused by vitamin B12, folic acid and iron deficiencies.

The body needs iron because it supplies blood, aids blood cell metabolism, increases the flow of blood and also helps in the production of red blood cells. When there is a drop in red blood cells in the body, you may experience symptoms like headache, appetite loss, fatigue, shortness of breath, etc.

Foods that increase the production of red blood cell are blood-building foods. In this article, I am going to show you some Nigerian food that gives blood and prevents anaemia.

1.  Okra Soup:

Apart from other great health benefits of okra, okra plant is very rich in iron which helps in boosting the blood, increases blood level and also aids digestion.


2. Beef:

Another food that gives blood and also enriches the red blood cells because of its high amount of iron present in it is Beef, popularly known as red meat. Vitamin B-12 is also high in beef, and this is a great nutrient for building the blood. People suffering from anaemia should consume red meat because the variety of iron in it is the one that can be easily absorbed by the blood.

3. Unripe Plantain:

Plantain is a very popular Nigerian food that gives blood. It can be eaten fried, boiled or porridge. Apart from its delicious taste, unripe plantain is a good source of iron and other nutrients. If you regularly consume unripe plantain, it would boost the production of red blood cells in the body and help prevent anaemia. Unripe plantain supplies instant blood to the body.


4. Fish:

Fish is very rich in iron, copper and protein that helps the red blood cells locate iron that would boost blood production. Eating fish regularly would benefit your blood greatly. People that have lost lots of blood because of menstruation, childbirth, or blood donation are advised to eat lots of fish to restore their red blood back. Sardine, catfish, mackerel, tuna, and salmon are good fish to consume.

Egg yolk specifically is very rich in iron and vitamin B12, which particularly benefits the blood cells immensely. Whichever way you choose to eat your egg, boiled, fried, or poached, your body would still benefit from the iron present in them.

6. Bitter Leaf Soup:

To boost up your blood and cure other illnesses like hypertension, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, consume lots of bitter leaves.

7. Fruits:

There are some fruits that have enough iron present in them, which aids in improving the massive production of red blood cells in the body, fruits like dates, watermelon, citrus fruits like orange and tangerine. Fruits also contain nutrients like vitamin C that can boost the immune system, which prevents infections and keeps the body strong and healthy.

There are various types of nuts, but the most nuts you should add to your diet are tiger nuts, cashew nuts, walnuts, and almond nuts

Foods like cowpea, peas, beans are known as legumes, and they are rich in folic acid and iron, which can increase the production of red blood cells in the body. 


10. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables:

Dark green leafy vegetables are packed and loaded with lots of nutrients that improve the body and general health, so therefore, you can never go wrong by including dark green leafy vegetables in your daily diet. These vegetables are rich in iron, which is key in the production of red blood cells. Besides iron, they are also rich in folic acid, which also helps with the production of red blood cells. 

The good thing about dark green leafy vegetables is that there are so many to choose from, including spinach, fluted pumpkin leaves (ugu), waterleaf, bitter leaf, and more. You can also enjoy them in different ways.

  2. Sweet Potatoes Leaf: This leaf has a high amount of iron in it which makes it a natural blood tonic. Sweet potato leaf can be used to treat anaemia because it has a substance that can boost blood production.
  3. Blood Of Jesus Leaf: This leaf is high in iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid which makes it an effective plant. According to research, it can treat iron deficiency and anaemia.
  4. Ugu Vegetable Leaf: This is one popular leaf that people use to prepare all sorts of delicacies. When mixed with malt or milk, it becomes the most popular blood tonic mixture in Nigeria. 
  5. Zobo Leaf: Zobo is also a popular leaf in Nigeria that has the ability to boost blood because it is rich in iron.
