The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken action against two shops, Nigeria, for allegedly selling unapproved products that were advertised to boost sexual performance. The products in question included Hajiya Ayesha Snuff, AK47, Bulletproof, and Hajiya Aysha Maisanda, all of which were reported to be aphrodisiacs.

According to Mr. Tamanuwa Baba, Deputy Director of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate at NAFDAC, the agency conducted the operation following intelligence reports received about the shops. “The products are meant to boost sexual performance, and some of them are believed to be manufactured in Ghana,” he said.

However, NAFDAC’s laboratory analysis revealed that these products contain a chemical substance called Pyridine, which is potentially harmful to the human body. “We found a lot of unregistered products in the two shops. We will begin immediate investigations,” Mr. Tamanuwa added.

Pyridine is a colorless liquid with a distinct, unpleasant odor that is used in the production of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides and exposure.

The agency has apprehended the sales representative in the Zuba shop, pending the owner’s return from his journey. “We will get in touch with the owner of the shop on where he is sourcing these products from, but from the label on the products, some of them were allegedly manufactured in Ghana,” Mr. Tamanuwa stated.

He also warned of the potential health risks associated with these unregistered products. “Pyridine, which is the chemical that is contained in some of these products, can cause cancer, skin irritation, and even lead to death,” he said. “After the investigation, these products are going to be destroyed because they have not been registered by us.”

Similar sets of products were reportedly discovered in a shop at Utako known as Kabo Investment Limited. Mr. Tamanuwa noted that it was alarming that these unapproved products had flooded the market and urged consumers to be cautious. The agency recently conducted a similar operation in Sokoto, where some of these products were removed from a shop.

The use of aphrodisiacs is not uncommon and other parts of the world. These products are believed to enhance sexual performance, increase libido, and improve sexual satisfaction. However, many of these products are not regulated by government agencies, and their safety and efficacy are not backed by scientific evidence.

The demand for sexual enhancement products has increased over the years, and many manufacturers and sellers have taken advantage of the market to sell untested and potentially dangerous products. The government has been cracking down on the sale of unapproved drugs and other products, especially those that pose health risks to consumers.

NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and chemicals. The agency is mandated to ensure that all products in the market are safe, efficacious, and of good quality.

However, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has taken a strong stance against the sale of unapproved products that are advertised to boost sexual performance.
