Bumex (bumetanide) is a diuretic drug (water pill) used to reduce extra fluid in the body; it prevents the body from absorbing excess salt and allows the salt to be passed into urine. Fluid retention (oedema) often occurs in people with conditions like kidney disease, heart failure, and liver disease, and Bumex can reduce the symptoms of these conditions, such as swelling in the legs, arms and abdomen. The drug causes you to urinate more and helps you eliminate excess water and salt. 

Dosage

The usual dosage of Bumex is 0.5 mg to 2 mg per day, and it is given as a single dose in most patients.

Bumex is used to aid the treatment of several health conditions that cause water retention in the body, so the dosage is usually based on a patient’s medical condition and how they respond to treatment over time. However, this medication is to be taken by mouth as directed by a doctor or pharmacist, usually once ot twice daily. 

Older adults would be advised to start with lower doses to decrease their risks of side effects. Also, it is best not to take this medication within 4 hours before your bedtime so you won’t have to get up multiple times to urinate at night. 

It is also advisable to take this medication at the same every day and not increase or reduce the dose unless directed to do so by your doctor. 

Side Effects of Bumex

Here are some mild side effects that usually do not require medication, but talk to your doctor if they become bothersome or stay for too long.

• Headache.
• Loss of appetite.
• Increased thirst.
• Nausea.
• Muscle weakness.
• Unusual sweating.
• Stomach pain.
• Vomiting.

Here are some serious side effects of Bumex; if you notice any of them, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

• Kidney injury (change in the amount of urine or trouble passing urine).
• Allergic reactions such as itching or hives, skin rash, and swelling of the lips, face, or tongue.
• Low potassium level, which will cause trouble breathing, muscle cramps or pain, dizziness, chest pain, fast and irregular heartbeat, feeling faint or lightheadedness, and falls.
• Decreased hearing, ringing of the ears.
• Low blood pressure which can cause dizziness, weakness, fainting or lightheadedness, falls, and tiredness.
• Severe diarrhoea.
• Unusual bruising or bleeding.

Precaution 

• Bumex may cause some allergic reactions, so talk to your doctor if you are allergic to it. 
• Before using Bumex, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially for liver problems, gout, kidney problems, and inability to make urine.
• This drug may make you dizzy, so do not drive or operate machinery.
• If you have diabetes, this drug may increase your blood sugar.
• Bumex can reduce potassium levels in the blood, so your doctor may tell you to increase your intake of potassium-rich foods.
