Flagyl, also known as metronidazole, is an antibiotic effective for treating certain bacteria and parasitic infections. It works by stopping the growth of parasites and bacteria, but it doesn’t work for viral infections.
Flagyl treats parasitic infections, including amebic liver abscesses, giardia infections of the small intestine, amebic dysentery, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomonas vaginal infections. It is also used alone or in combination with other antibiotics to treat abscesses in the abdomen, liver, brain, and pelvis caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria.
Flagyl can also be used to treat infections of the colon called C. difficile and H. pylori, which causes intestinal and stomach ulcers.
Metronidazole is available as a topical gel for acne rosacea and a vaginal gel for bacterial vaginosis.
Dosage
Flagyl is available in 200mg and 500mg tablets, but for use in ER, it is available in 750mg tablets. Flagyl injection is also available in 500mg of buffered 100ml vial.
The medication is to be taken orally as directed by a doctor. However, take it with food or a full glass of milk to prevent stomach upset. The dosage for Flagyl is based on a patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. It is best to take the medication at evenly spaced times or at the same time every day.
In addition, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days, you should take the medication until the prescribed dose is finished because stopping the treatment too early may make the infection return.
Side Effects Of Flagyl
Flagyl is generally tolerated with appropriate use, but common side effects include headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, metallic taste, dry mouth, dark-coloured urine, constipation, rash and weight loss (anorexia).
Other side effects of metronidazole that may be serious and life-threatening include seizures, brain disease, pelvic pain or pressure, proctitis, decrease in libido, encephalopathy, colon cancer, etc.
This is not a complete list of side effects, so if you notice any side effects after taking Flagyl, contact a doctor for further guidance.
