Kaduna State, in northern Nigeria, is grappling with a concerning outbreak of diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. As of [Current Date], health authorities have reported a surge in suspected cases, with a total of 68 individuals displaying symptoms of the disease. Tragically, eight deaths have been recorded, prompting urgent measures to contain the spread and prevent further fatalities.

The Director of Public Health at the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Hamza Ibrahim-Ikara, shared these alarming statistics in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna. He revealed that the suspected cases have been identified in four local government areas, including Makarfi, Kubau, Jema’a (Kafanchan), and Kaduna North.

Among the fatalities, five occurred in Jema’a, and three were reported in Makarfi, highlighting the severity of the outbreak in these regions. Currently, health authorities are closely monitoring one suspected case at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, while 28 samples have been taken and sent to the laboratory for testing. However, until laboratory results confirm the cases, they are classified as suspected.
